Is It Okay To Be In A Relationship At a Young Age?
(Disclaimer: This is just my personal take when it comes to relationships, mostly to my fellow teens)
As a teenager who hasn't been in a relationship even just once, It is hard to speak or talk about relationships. But since I'm surrounded by people(friends), I can somehow see how a relationship would look like or what happens in a relationship (mostly relationship between teenagers).
There comes a time in life when you feel alone, or that you need someone to be with for you to be able to feel at ease, to feel that you are loved. That's when 'Relationship Thoughts' strike us. It happened to me lots of times already, I admit that. You would think that the only way for you to be happy & feel loved is to be in a relationship, neglecting the fact that there are many people around you who will shower you with their love & affection. YOUR FAMILY, BRETHREN, TRUE FRIENDS,etc.,
You JUST DON'T CHOOSE a partner, but you PRAY for it and you let GOD choose for you. You don't enter a relationship just because you're bored, feeling lonely, or just because you feel like everyone has it. You go for a relationship because you're ready for commitment, ready to enter a serious relationship that will lead to marriage— now I know it's too early to talk about marriage as a teenager, but isn't that where a relationship is supposed to head?
In this post, I'll share you my opinions on what you, or we should meditate on when ' Relationship Thoughts' strike us teens:
1. Friendship Before Heading to a Relationship
You don't just meet people and expect to be in a relationship already right? (hehe) Of course, you need to get to know them before you go to another level, and Friendship is the best way for that. Establishing friendship is good because besides knowing their likes and dislikes, you might understand each other more when you step up in your 'relationship'. Also, friendship is the base or the foundation of a good relationship with others.
2. Neglecting More Important Things
Us teenagers should prioritize more important things in life, like Education. Experienced Older/Mature people always tell us to not enter a relationship at a young age because we should focus more on our studies. For us to have the best & successful future. Some teens these days tend to leave things they need to do because they are too focused on their relationship. Thinking that " If I don't have time for us he/she will leave me. " Being the reason why they neglect the things that should be more important than their relationship.
3. Establish your Relationship With The Lord
We should establish our relationship first with the Lord before others. This is somewhat connected to #2 because GOD is the most important above all, above everything. That's why we need to have a firm foundation with the Lord. How many hours do you spend on the internet all day? I, myself can admit that I do spend my time a lot on social media, but these days I try to do my devotion regularly. We should crave for His presence first before the presence of others. Seek the Lord & lay everything before Him.
4. Prayer
This is our main point after all the things we've talked about :) Prayer, this is VERY powerful. The word itself is strong, but the one we pray to is above everything. If you have doubts, struggling with your decisions in life, hurting, and in every emotion that we feel, always remember that we should come to the Lord first before consulting with other people. The Lord wants to help us, and the Lord wants us to be in His warm embrace.
Young relationships may be overwhelming when trials hit you, and the Lord doesn't want His children to be hurt. That's why we all need to grow spiritually and emotionally first before entering a relationship. In Song of Songs 8:4 it says, "Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you: Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires."
Focus on far more important things, especially on our relationship with The Father. Always pray for His guidance and wisdom & knowledge in every decision we make, and always seek Him in everything.
